How we can help

Support at home

A Home-Start volunteer will visit you in your own home, usually once a week, for a couple of hours. You decide what you will do together. They will help you with practical tasks, and emotional issues such as:

  • Getting to appointments
  • Establishing routines
  • Accessing benefits, grants and financial support
  • Using local services or specialist support
  • Getting involved with your local community
  • Encouraging play and reading with your children
  • Listening to your worries, concerns and hopes for your family
  • Offering a shoulder to cry on
  • Sharing their own experiences of parenting and family life
  • Being there because they want to be – not because someone has ‘sent’ them
  • Giving you a break
  • Offering advice if you ask for it
  • Providing support, friendship and encouragement

Our volunteers are all parents themselves. They are trained and criminal records checked before being carefully matched with any family.

Group support

We also run family groups. They are held twice a week at Barnbygate Hall, Barnbygate, Newark, where you and your child(ren) can come along. We offer the chance for:

  • Children to socialise, play, learn and have fun
  • One-to-one time with your child(ren) reading, learning & playing
  • Parents to pick up advice, tips and help from group leaders, volunteers and other parents
  • Parents to meet other parents

Specialist group support

We also offer specialised group support. This is for parents struggling to cope with a particular issue such as post natal illness, being a lone parent, etc. Please ask for details of the courses available.

We support families facing all kinds of problems:

  • Isolation – no family or friends to help you, feeling alone in your community
  • The effects of post-natal illness (on mums and dads)
  • Illness or injury – of you, your children, your partner or another family member
  • Disability or mental health issues - of your children, you, your partner or another family member
  • Bereavement - of your children, you, your partner or another family member
  • Relationship problems
  • Multiple births – twins, triplets or more
  • Substance abuse
  • Domestic violence or abuse
  • Teenage pregnancy or being a young parent
  • Feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or unhappy
  • Poverty or financial difficulties
  • Poor housing
  • Or anything similar

You may be going through one or more of these issues. You may have a different problem. There is no complete list – if your family is struggling and needs help then Home-Start could support you.

Why we support:

To help families become stronger; to support parents until they are strong enough to cope on their own; and to help children thrive and give them the best possible start in life.
